Precision releases three transformers for Power Integrations Reference Design RDK-160
Precision and Power Integrations combine technologies for lowest component count charger / adapter designs.
A custom transformer from Precision Incorporated helps this LinkSwitch-II CV/CC charger achieve its goals of reduced component count, EMI and isolation performance, and compliance with international energy efficiency standards. Fewer components mean more flexibility to design more compact applications than this example.
Precision Incorporated has released three custom transformers for use with the new Power Integrations LinkSwitch®-II reference designs for high-efficiency chargers and power adapters. The new Precision transformers help eliminate the need for EMI filtering components — reducing an application’s component count by 30% — while meeting global energy efficiency standards such as Energy Star 2.0, CEC, EU CoC and China CECP. Each transformer is designed for a different LinkSwitch-II application. Reference Design RD-157 is a 2.75W USB charger that complies with the China Charger standard for constant voltage/constant current (CV/CC) cell phone chargers, and requires the fewest components of any charger available today. RD-158 is a 5W charger/adapter design for high-end cell phones, PDAs and other power-hungry mobile devices. And RD-159 is a 2.4W adapter for cordless phones that can withstand a 10 kV surge.
“Precision is excited to work with Power Integrations by supplying the transformers for the LinkSwitch-II reference designs,” said David Anderson, Precision Incorporated’s CEO. “Welly Chou, our Senior Design Engineer for the Power Integrations applications, has worked extensively with Power Integrations to apply their patented E-Shield™ winding technology to Precision’s custom transformers. Aside from the LinkSwitch-II controller chip itself, the transformers are the only custom parts on the reference design circuit boards.”
“The Precision transformers eliminated the need for common mode chokes and the Y capacitor typically needed for EMI filtering,” Chou explained. “They achieve EMI standards compliance by a wide margin. The unique winding of the Precision transformer coil is critical. If it’s not wound correctly, the efficiency of the reference design power supply slips, and components must be added to minimize EMI.” Chou said that the Precision transformers have been approved by Power Integrations to meet its stringent construction, EMI and isolation standards. All three transformers are RoHS compliant.

The transformers for the LinkSwitch-II reference design are the latest in a long series of components that Precision has designed and manufactured for Power Integrations product families including TOPSwitch, PeakSwitch, TinySwitch, DPA-Switch and other converter products.
